What are blank roll labels?

Blank means ‘empty’ or ‘unprinted’. These are unprinted Roll labels that you can print yourself using a suitable printer or label by hand. Blank roll labels are available from packaging warehouse in various sizes and shapes, offering a wide range of possible uses. You can use them to package and label your products quickly and efficiently. We offer a wide range of paper and plastic materials for your blank roll labels. One advantage of blank roll labels is their flexibility. Blank roll labels offer many advantages for both wholesale warehouses and retail shops. For example, stock levels in the warehouse can change quickly or new products can be added – you can simply recreate and apply blank roll labels. This saves you a lot of time and money compared to printed labels. They are therefore a convenient and efficient solution for organising goods, storing them in the warehouse and finding them quickly. Whether it's cans, boxes or individual products, blank labels make it easy to label every package.

Where are blank labels used?

Blank roll labels are used in many industries, whether in offices, IT, healthcare, at cash registers or in warehouses. Two typical areas of application that you are probably familiar with are blank roll labels in supermarkets and logistics.

Warehousing and logistics: Blank roll labels play a crucial role in logistics and warehousing. They help to keep track of goods received or shipped by assigning each item a unique identification ID. Labels can also contain information about orders, products, delivery dates and other details. They also enable the warehouse or logistics team to track the entire supply chain and the progress of each order. Blank labels also offer greater efficiency when picking goods in the warehouse. By labelling the items, employees can immediately see which products they need to pick to fulfil the order. This saves time and effort when collecting goods and can significantly reduce processing time. Blank roll labels that can be printed using thermal transfer are particularly popular. This is because their heat-sensitive coating makes them particularly durable and waterproof labels. They withstand difficult conditions such as wetness or cold and remain clearly legible. For all these reasons, it is obvious that blank labels are indispensable for warehousing and logistics.

Supermarket: You have probably noticed that an incredible number of labels are used in retail. These labels serve various purposes. Blank labels have been specially developed to meet the requirements of modern retail. They are used to identify products, indicate prices and provide information about the products. Blank labels are also used to advertise promotional offers or other special offers. New labels can be printed quickly and easily when adjustments are needed. The labels make shopping easier for customers and simplify pricing and price adjustments for employees. New blank labels can be printed quickly and also serve as product labels at various sausage, meat, fish and cheese counters. This also applies to loose fruit and vegetable products. Thermal paper labels are also used, which everyone is familiar with. They are made of a special type of paper and are suitable for thermal printing. You will be familiar with this type of paper from your receipts, for example.

How can blank labels be printed?

Would you like to print your own labels at home or at your company? No problem – at packaging warehouse, we offer blank labels with various label printing options. We have thermal paper for direct thermal printing, thermal transfer printable labels and labels for inkjet printing available for you. All three printing methods have different advantages, which we will be happy to explain to you to help you make your decision. Direct thermal and thermal transfer printing have one key thing in common: they are both ‘pressless’ processes, meaning that there is no printing plate used to transfer the design onto the material. Inkjet printing is also a contactless printing process, with the print image being produced by systematically firing small droplets of ink.

Barcode labels

Thermal direct printing with thermal paper

If you want to print labels using direct thermal printing, you can use our thermal paper. The print side of our thermal paper is coated with a temperature-sensitive colour pigment layer. Heat causes the colour pigments to form on the paper. The direct thermal printer consists of a ‘print head’ equipped with small heating elements. The print head moves across the thermal paper and heats the material where text or a motif is to be printed. The heat causes a chemical reaction and the paper turns black in the desired areas. It is easy to use, does not require a ribbon and incurs only low disposal costs. Thermal direct printing can be used, for example, to quickly produce postcards, address labels with data matrix codes, GS1 transport labels, best-before dates, VDA labels and classic receipts. In addition, despite the very high printing speed, the print quality is excellent. However, only paper can be used as a printing medium and its suitability for outdoor use is rather limited. These labels are only intended for short-term use, as thermal paper is sensitive to light and heat. The print becomes illegible after a long period of time. Our thermal rolls, which are still unprinted, should be stored in a cool, dry place. Light, heat and abrasion should also be avoided if the paper is stored for a long period of time. Even printed thermal paper can last for several years if stored properly. Important to know: Thermal paper should not be disposed of with waste paper. The thermal layer of the paper contains chemical ingredients and must therefore be disposed of in the residual waste.

Thermal transfer printing

In contrast to direct thermal printing, thermal transfer printing uses a colour ribbon and heat to print the labels. A thermal transfer printer has a print bar with dots that are heated during the printing process. Various materials can be selected for thermal transfer printing; it is not essential to use paper, and packaging warehouse also offers plastics such as white polypropylene film (PP). During the printing process, the label materials are inserted into the printer and a colour ribbon (also known as thermal transfer foil) is also inserted. The printing material is transported through the print head with the colour ribbon. The heated dots melt the colour ribbon, which then bonds with the printing material. The colour particles are released from the colour ribbon by heat and transferred to the label. Different ribbons are used depending on the duration of use. The simplest and most cost-effective ribbon is the wax ribbon – however, if your labels need to be particularly abrasion-resistant or chemical-resistant (e.g. for technical labelling), then you should definitely use a resin ribbon. The advantages of thermal transfer printing are: excellent long-term quality, great legibility, high resolution up to 600 dpi, high abrasion resistance, liquid resistance, use of different printing materials, no printer warm-up time required; printing can start immediately. These types of labels are used as type plates, for labelling in outdoor storage, for car tyres and electrical parts, but also in the food and pharmaceutical industries. Unlike direct thermal printing, multicolour thermal transfer foils can also be used for multicolour printing. To do this, the printing material is printed several times in succession. However, colour printing also entails higher costs, as the ribbon can only be used once. Disposal costs for the ribbons must also be taken into account.

Inkjet printing process

As a label printing company, Packaging Warehouse offers you not only thermal printing but also inkjet printing. With our inkjet paper labels, you can expect great printing results. Inkjet printing is a contactless printing process. Inkjet printers do not require fixed printing forms; they work according to the matrix principle. The print image is created by the targeted ejection of ink droplets. There are two different processes for inkjet printing: drop-on-demand (DOD) and continuous. The contactless printing process means that even uneven or pressure-sensitive surfaces can be printed on. Inkjet printing also impresses with its speed and flexibility. Inkjet printers offer a number of advantages: they are usually less expensive, require less maintenance and can also be used to print high-quality photos.

Would you like to print your blank labels with an inkjet printer and achieve the best results? Then we offer you high-quality inkjet paper in matt with permanent adhesive. Only with inkjet paper can your printer reach its full potential. Our inkjet paper is made of firmly pressed cellulose, which prevents printer ink from showing through. In addition, the paper's density prevents the ink from running. However, the paper is not coarse-grained, but has an extremely smooth surface. Inkjet paper is surface-coated (usually with polymer) so that the paper absorbs the ink more quickly, protects the print and makes it more durable. If you want to print special graphics on your labels, it is definitely advantageous to use our high-quality paper. Our paper can be used for inkjet printers and devices with inkjet technology.
