What are carton sizes by shipping company?
Until the end of 1997, Deutsche Post had a complete shipping monopoly. Every letter, every small package, every parcel could only be transported via this state-owned shipping company. By January 1, 2008, this monopoly was fundamentally reformed, and the entire postal market here was liberalized. Anyone who has something to send today can therefore choose completely freely from a large number of mail order companies operating in this country. The most important providers for the mail order business are:
- DHL
- DPD
- GLS
- Hermes
- UPS
As already mentioned at the beginning, each of these shipping companies divides its packages into different classes. These are defined by three core elements:
- the maximum dimensions of the shipping boxes,
- the maximum weight per package (class) and
- the associated shipping costs.
The challenge: Each shipping service provider defines its own benchmarks for different reasons. The fact that some of them calculate shipping costs based on a variety of different variables does not make the choice any easier. Here you can distinguish not only by dimensions and weight, but also by delivery location, for example.
